Cristiano Ronaldo was an unused substitute in Manchester United’s 6-3 trouncing at the Etihad stadium on Sunday. France International, Anthony Martial got the nod ahead of Ronaldo and repaid the trust Ten Hag had in him in what was his first appearance for United since August 22 with a brace.

Martial last scored for united exactly a year ago, the two goals which now put him in a strong position to get a start against a rejuvenated Everton side led by Frank Lampard on Sunday. Erik Ten Hag used his all five substitution available for him against City but left Ronaldo on the bench.

“I wouldn’t bring him in because out of respect for Cristiano, for his big career,” Ten Hag said. “And the other thing was the advantage I could bring Anthony Martial, he needs the minutes but I don’t want to point it out like that.”

United lost 6-3 for only the sixth time in their history and the first time since the hammering at Southampton in October 1996.
