North African country, Morocco broke a longstanding record by becoming the first African country to reach the quarter finals stage of the world cup since 2010 when Ghana was the last African country to play in the last eight.

Morocco also becomes the fourth African country to participate in the World cup last 8 after defeating 3-0 in the penalty shootouts. Cameroon (1990), Senegal (2002) and Ghana (2010) were other African countries to have played in the last eight, each of them failing to progress beyond quarter finals.
