Busquets announces retirement

Barcelona midfielder, Sergio Busquets has announced his retirement from international football.

The decision came after he captained Spain in the 2022 world cup in Qatar, where the team were eliminated from the Round 16 by Morocco.

The midfielder who was part of La Roja’s golden generation that won the 2010 world cup in South Africa and the Euro 2012 jointly hosted by Poland and Ukraine, officially put an end to what was an amazing journey in international football.

He wrote on his official social media handles: “After almost 15 years and 143 matches, I’d like to announce that it is time to say goodbye to the national team.”

The 34-year-old racked up 143 caps and scored 2 goals for the Spain in his 13 years in the national team. He also made 17 appearances at the world cup for spain, a national record.

Other players like Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Cristiano Ronaldo, Pepe, Thomas Muller, Manuel Neuer and Angel Di Maria may follow suit in announcing their retirement from international football after the Qatar 2022 world cup.
